About The Department

History

The Music Department was established under the name of Music Sciences in the 1994-1995 academic year and the first graduates of the department were in the 1998-1999 academic year. The students are admitted to two programs, namely the Music Department and the Traditional Turkish Music Department. The quota of the Music Program is 20, and the quota of the Traditional Turkish Music Program is 10.

Purpose

Having a performance-oriented education program, the Music Department aims for graduates to specialize in both performance-oriented and theoretical areas of music. Aiming to train qualified individuals in the fields of theory and performance with the faculty members in both art majors, the Music Department has adopted a teaching approach that has a strong relationship with its traditional ties and blends contemporary education approaches with the eyes of the future. One of the privileged aspects of our department is that Turkish Music lessons and instruments are included in the program, unlike the existing Fine Arts Faculties. The Music Program is a curriculum in which general music education is given on equal terms with our traditional music. The program aims to provide education with the following courses in theoretical field: Basic Music Theories, Harmony, Music History, Music Literature, Art Philosophy, Music Forms, Instrument Knowledge, Ottoman and Turkish Classical Music Theory, Turkish Folk Music Theory etc.; on the other hand, it aims to provide education with the following courses in the field of performance: Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello, Flute, Guitar, Oud, Qanun, Ney, Baglama, Turkish Classical Music Repertoire, Turkish Folk Music Repertoire and Singing. The Traditional Turkish Music Program is a curriculum in which our traditional music is taught. The program aims to provide education with the following courses in theoretical field: Basic Music Theories, Art History, General Music History, Art Philosophy, Ottoman, Music Forms, Turkish Classical Music Theory, Turkish Folk Music Theory etc.; on the other hand, it aims to provide education with the following courses in the field of performance: Oud, Qanun, Ney, Baglama, Turkish Classical Music Repertoire, Turkish Religious Music and Turkish Folk Music Repertoire. These courses, which have an active role in transferring our awareness of culture, history and identity to the young generation, aim to convey all aspects of our musical history with theoretical and practical aspects to the students. Objectives for human qualifications such as providing students with behavioral aesthetics through the art of music and raising sensitive individuals with a sense of social responsibility are among the priorities of the department.

Opportunities

The department, which has a modern infrastructure physically, has insulated individual study and teaching staff rooms, smart classrooms, choir and orchestra study rooms and a 200-seat concert hall equipped with professional sound systems. The fact that we have lecturers from countries such as the United States, Kyrgyzstan, and Azerbaijan and artistic experiences are shared at an international level provides an advantage in the education of our students. Events such as concerts, talks, workshops, etc. are frequently held within the department, and important names of the field are invited to these events. Bringing important names of the world of art such as Göksel Baktagir, Yurdal Tokcan, Melihat Gülses, Erol Parlak, İsmail Altunsaray, Cihat Aşkın, Bülent Pet, Ulucan Brothers, Ozan Tunca etc. together with students and sharing knowledge and experience are among the activities that the department cares about. In addition, active contributions are made to the artistic life of the city and the country with the activities carried out by various academic societies, student choirs and student orchestras in the field of Western and Turkish music. The music department also cooperates with the Music Departments of other Fine Arts Faculties at national and international levels and carries out student and lecturer exchange activities within the scope of Leonardo, Erasmus and Farabi programs.

Educational Benefits and Business Network

After graduating from the department, students can work as artists, researchers, critics, art consultants or music directors. In addition, they can work as performers in ensembles, orchestras and choirs in the field of Western and Turkish music, and as academic staff members in educational institutions related to fine arts. They can also work as music teachers in institutions affiliated to the Ministry of National Education.
